The Crystal Coast Men’s Republican Club meets on the second Thursday of the month at Finz Restaurant in Morehead City. There is a social period at 6:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the program. September’s speaker will be Dawn Baldwin, who appeared with President Bush when he was in Raleigh addressing the Social Security problem. October’s speaker will be Bill Fletcher, Republican candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction. The club president, Sam Sanford, can be reached at 240-3864. This month it will be at Cox Family Restaurant, with dinner at 6:15 p.m., followed by the program at7pm.Forfurtherinformation, contact vice president and program coordinator Alma Tilghman at 728-3582. The county’s GOP breakfasts will resume on Sept. 17 at the Golden Corral; costs will be whatever you pay for breakfast. The program, starting at 9:00 a.m. will be a symposium on property rights with emphasis on the Supreme Court decision regarding private property in New London, CT, and the city’s taking of this property “for the public benefit.” The 3rd Congressional District Republican Executive Committee meets the first Saturday of the month (except this month when it will be the on the second Saturday so as to avoid conflict with Labor Day) at Ryan’s Steak House in Greenville, starting at 11:00 a.m., with a break for lunch. Our county has somehow managed to have six voting members on this committee (including me), all of whom are normally there. At all of the above meetings, any registered republicans are welcome. The clubs will, of course, welcome prospective members with open arms. Our party is naturally concerned with the voting problem here. However, we believe it was caused by human error, rather than a machine malfunction. The machines did exactly what they had been programmed to do. We believe the machines should have undergone a thorough test to determine their reliability and are disappointed that a verdict has been rendered and sentence passed without a trial. If you need any general information, our precinct officers are: Jack Millis, chairman, 247-5985, and Sarah Fulcher, vice chairman, 808-2569. A Good Tsunami Story NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus I who survived I the tsunami I waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old tortoise, in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said. The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds). was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him. “It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a ‘mother’,” ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park, told AFP. “After it was swept and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together,” the ecologist added. “The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it follows its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother,” Kahumbu added. “The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years,” he explained.
